Steven Spielberg shared new reflections on his interest in inexplicable phenomena and extraterrestrials in a behind-the-scenes video released by Universal Pictures, as part of the promotion of his next film, Disclosure Day.
The 79-year-old director explained that his fascination with the unknown has been present since his childhood.
“I have always been interested in things that cannot be explained, and I have made many films about things that could not be explained, from sharks to flying saucers,” he said.
The filmmaker recalled that, as a child, he developed curiosity about the night sky and the possibility of life outside of Earth.“It is not just a possibility, but a guarantee that there is life beyond this planet,” he said.
The film, whose full story has not yet been revealed, features a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo.
Steven Spielberg presented a first preview of the film in December, through a trailer that introduced some of the images and tone of the story.
The project was reported by Variety in April 2024, noting that Spielberg was developing a film about UFOs based on an original idea of his, in collaboration with screenwriter David Koepp, known for writing Jurassic Park (1993) and The War of the Worlds (2005).
In the recent clip, Steven Spielberg addressed the relevance of the topic of extraterrestrial life for today’s audiences.
“People’s questions about what is happening not only in our skies, but in our worlds and our realities, have reached a critical level of fascination: are we alone or are we not alone? And if someone knows that we are not alone, why haven’t they told us?” he said.
Throughout his career, the filmmaker has explored these themes in several science fiction films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., as well as other films such as War of the Worlds and Jurassic Park, which address extraordinary situations.
Recently, Spielberg achieved EGOT status by winning a Grammy for Best Musical Film on February 1, cementing his recognition in various fields of the entertainment industry.
After his last film, The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical work inspired by his childhood and which received seven Oscar nominations, the director seems to once again return to elements of his childhood and his interest in the unknown with DisclosureDay.
The information available about the plot is limited, although it is suggested that the story revolves around the official confirmation of the existence of extraterrestrial life.
According to the film’s logline: “If you found out that we were not alone, if someone showed you and proved it, would it scare you? This summer, the truth belongs to 7 billion people. We are approaching… Disclosure Day.”
Likewise, the film will combine elements of science fiction with the exploration of contemporary questions about the existence of life outside Earth and the dissemination of information to a global audience.
Disclosure Day is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 12, 2026. With this project.
