REVIEW |Yakuza Kiwami 3

It is no exaggeration to say that Yakuza is one of the most original and beloved sagas in the industry.Since its first installment, more than 20 years ago, it was able to capture the imagination of millions of players who loved to walk the streets of Kamurocho distributing justice with honor and absolute violence. But after the excellent Yakuza 0, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio saw the potential to bring classic titles into a modern, polished experience. Thus was born Yakuza Kiwami and its sequel, remakes of the first two installments of the saga that faithfully updated them.Although making changes was between inevitable and expected, the essence of the originals remained current and the tangible improvements made us overlook some relevant differences.YakuzaKiwami 3

Yakuza 3 picks up directly after the events of the previous title, with Kiryu stepping down as Fourth President of the Tojo Clan to run an orphanage in Okinawa. It is one of the most emotional installments of the saga since it explores in depth the human side of our favorite yakuza and at the same time has a strong dose of intrigue, last-minute revelations and action galore. It is true that Yakuza Kiwami 3

After saying goodbye to Kamurocho, the game takes us to Okinawa and presents us with a new district to explore. There we will meet the new characters who will accompany us during the adventure and we will begin to grow fond of the island.Walking through the central market, its shops and visiting the arcades maintains its charm. The customization options are an important part of the experience and we can dress Kiryu with a large number of different clothes, saving up to five styles for the island and another five for when we visit Kamurocho. The same thing happens with our cell phone, which we will change at the beginning of the adventure, which in addition to offering cosmetic changes allows us to activate certain real benefits for the adventure. For example, some wallpapers allow us to see hidden objects or people with whom we can interact on the minimap. In addition, we can equip three hanging accessories with benefits such as improving attack, defense or the amount of money we get in battles.

As we go through the game we will find an endless number of secondary missions that, although they are fewer than in the original, are more than enough to keep us distracted from the main conflict. There will also be random battles because, as is traditional in the saga, every street thug believes he has a chance against the Fourth President of the Tojo Clan. The fights are simple and brief, they can become a little annoying but their frequency can be modified through the cell phone accessories.Another activity we can do is connect with passers-by through the “Infrared” of the phone. If we find them three times, the link reaches its maximum and they will reveal some secrets to us.Although it is not a complex system, it is still something fun to do and a way to get new rewards. In the same way we can open boxes with surprises that are hidden throughout the mapping that will give us, among other things, some of the keys to open lockers.

Yakuza Kiwami 3

This remake makes a multitude of changes with respect to the original, as expected, but they are not only technical. The combat system is renewed and combines Kiryu’s traditional hand-to-hand style with a new one that implements all types of weapons. The issue is that weapons are activated automatically during combos, that is, there are almost no weapons per se in the game.It is true that occasionally we will be able to pick up an opponent’s dropped weapon from the ground, but weapons as we knew them no longer exist. The same thing happens with the “Revelations”, special situations from the original that taught us different “Heat Actions”.Those that remain are learned directly from a simple, linear and generic skill tree. However, for everything it lost it also adds a lot of new, interesting and really fun activities to complete.

The balance between drama and comedy in Yakuza Kiwami 3

The other addition to the game is the “Dark Ties” campaign that puts us in the shoes of Yoshitaka Mine. The idea of being able to play with a villain to understand his story, from his beginnings to reaching yakuza status, seems like a brilliant opportunity to understand him a little more. This alternative campaign is relatively short but has its own secondary missions and activities to distract us a little. If we want to go directly to the story, it doesn’t last more than 5 or 6 hours but the idea is to take advantage of all the optional content, the duration can easily be doubled.Without wanting to spoil anything for you, it is clear that Ryu Ga Gotoku is trying to break away from the classic line of games to bring the usual characters to new adventures.I don’t know if jumping on the remake train was the best path, but Dark Ties is content that more than justifies its inclusion in this new edition.
