Pakistan Warns Venezuela Crisis Threatens Global Peace at UN Meeting

NEW YORK: Pakistan has voiced serious concern over the growing tensions in Venezuela, warning that the situation could threaten both regional and international peace. The comment came during an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) called to address the unfolding events in Venezuela. Notably, this was the UNSC’s first meeting of the year, with Somalia taking the lead as chair.

Representing Pakistan, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, the Acting Permanent Representative, stressed that instability in Venezuela does not bode well, especially when the world is already grappling with multiple crises. He reminded the council that the United Nations Charter clearly requires member states to avoid using force against any country’s territorial integrity or political independence, and to respect the sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of others.

Ambassador Jadoon specifically warned against unilateral military actions, saying these not only violate international principles but also set dangerous precedents that could undermine global legal systems. He cautioned that actions threatening Venezuela’s stability might lead to unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences, as history has often shown.

Calling for calm and careful steps, Jadoon urged that now more than ever, dialogue and diplomacy are needed, and stressed that lasting solutions to political disagreements come only through peaceful means, with respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and without outside influence.

He also expressed hope that Latin America and the Caribbean, proudly declared a Zone of Peace, would steer clear of conflict and focus on greater cooperation and prosperity. Pakistan appealed to all parties to exercise restraint, avoid worsening the situation, and sincerely engage in talks and mediation, noting that the UN secretary-general’s office is ready to support such efforts.

Wrapping up his remarks, Ambassador Jadoon reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to help the Security Council promote peace and resolve conflicts, upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter. “Venezuela’s peace, stability, and the welfare of its people—free from foreign interference—must be the priority for everyone involved,” he said.

More updates are expected as the situation develops.
