Legacy of Kain: Ascendance will be the first new installment of the franchise in more than 20 years

In an unexpected move for fans of cult video games, Crystal Dynamics officially announced two releases that revitalize the Legacy of Kain saga: a remastered version of the classic Legacy of Kain: Defiance and a completely new title, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance. Both games will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, throughout the month of March.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance represents an important change in the series’ proposal, presenting itself as a two-dimensional action and platform game focused on vertical mobility, combat and the resolution of environmental challenges. The game recreates the dark universe of Nosgoth using pixel art and animated cutscenes, showing a world of collapsed kingdoms, enemy-inhabited ruins, and fragmented timelines.

One of the most striking aspects of Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is the option to control several protagonists: Kain, with his vampire powers;Raziel, first as a human Sarafan and then in his well-known vampire form;and the inclusion of Elaleth, a vampire with an agile and offensive playstyle. Each character has different abilities and brings a particular vision to the permanent conflict of Nosgoth. In addition, the return of the original voices of Michael Bell, Simon Templeman, Richard Doyle and Anna Gunn was confirmed, strengthening the link with the classic narrative.

Legacy of Kain: Ascendance Ascendance will be available starting March 31 and is emerging as a new entry point for new players, as well as a reunion opportunity for those who already follow the saga.

The other notable announcement, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, represents the technical and narrative update of the saga by improving the title launched in 2003, incorporating improved graphics and gameplay at the request of the community.Players will be able to switch between the original and updated graphics, allowing them to compare the visual evolution of the series.

Along with the visual improvements, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered incorporates a renewed camera system, new skins for the characters and a photo mode. The Deluxe edition adds an element of great interest: a playable demo of the canceled game Legacy of Kain: Dark Prophecy. This content, whose development was never completed, had remained out of reach of the public until now. In addition, the remaster offers levels removed from the original, concept art and story elements that allow us to delve deeper into the universe of Kain and Raziel.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is scheduled for release on March 3, in response to demand from a community that has kept the series’ legacy alive for twenty years.

The Legacy of Kain saga has a solid fan base, despite having been inactive for several years. The renewed interest in Legacy ofKain: Defiance Remastered and Legacy of Kain: Ascendance follows, in part, the re-release of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1

Crystal Dynamics indicated in its statement that part of the current development team comes from the fan community, which guarantees authenticity and respect for the original material. These new installments seek to revitalize interest in the complex mythology of Nosgoth, while opening themselves to a general public that expects more accessible and technologically updated experiences.

Thanks to smoother gameplay, better controls and access to previously unreleased content, the series offers both old fans and newcomers a complete experience, demonstrating how the preservation of classic franchises can significantly influence video game culture today.
