ICC Drops the Hammer: Bangladesh May Lose Points if World Cup Matches Boycotted

Bangladesh could be in hot water with the International Cricket Council (ICC) if it decides to skip its World Cup matches in India for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. According to reports, the ICC has signaled that Bangladesh risks losing valuable match points if its team refuses to travel for scheduled games.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had requested the ICC to move their World Cup fixtures from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. However, media outlets report that the ICC has turned down the appeal, reminding Bangladesh that tournament rules do not allow teams to skip matches. If Bangladesh refuses to play, those matches could be marked as forfeits.

For now, BCB officials say they haven’t received any official notice or written warning from the ICC about losing points or facing penalties. The board also insists that no final decision has been made and discussions are still underway with cricket’s governing body.

Tensions have been rising between the boards, especially after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was unexpectedly released from his IPL squad, Kolkata Knight Riders. Though some reports suggest the move was directed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), no official confirmation has been given. The sudden release has fueled further speculation around Bangladesh’s involvement in future cricket events held in India.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to kick off on February 7, with Bangladesh placed in Group C, set to compete in matches in Kolkata and Mumbai. As the tournament draws closer, fans and officials alike are hoping for a resolution that keeps all teams in the game and avoids any needless disruptions to cricket’s biggest party.
