The island faces a critical energy situation since mid-2024. The Cuban regime attributes this crisis to the lack of foreign currency to purchase oil and to the constant breakdowns in thermal power plants, which have endured decades of use.

The cut in the supply of Venezuelan crude oil after the fall of the former dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, on January 3, and pressure from the United States worsens the energy crisis.

The UNE, dependent on the Ministry of Energy and Mines, estimates a generation capacity of 1,345 megawatts (MW) for peak demand compared to a maximum demand of 3,150 MW.

The deficit between supply and demand will be 1,805 MW, and the estimated impact, that is, what will be disconnected to avoid disorderly blackouts, will reach 1,835MW.

The UNE report no longer specifies how many distributed generation plants (engines) remain inoperative due to lack of fuel (diesel and fuel oil) and lubricant, a relevant data to measure the impact of the end of Venezuelan oil.

From the published figures, it is observed that the number of engines out of service has increased in recent days.

Independent experts point out that the crisis responds to chronic underfinancing of the sector, completely controlled by the State since 1959.

Independent estimates estimate that between $8 billion and $10 billion would be needed to recover the electrical system.
