Last year, exports from the dairy sector reached 425,042 tons, with an income of USD 1,690 million, the highest value recorded in the last 12 years.Although the data shows an expanding industry, this growth is not reflected in the situation of several local companies, which face financial crises, layoffs and productive brakes.

One of the most notable cases was that of the Verónica dairy, based in Mardel Plata. The company has been going through strong uncertainty since April of last year, when it stopped paying salaries and accumulated a debt estimated at USD 50 million with producers and suppliers. The plant remains inactive and, although there was purchase interest from companies such as the French company Savencia, Adecoagro and Punta del Agua, the operation did not advance due to differences in valuations and internal conflicts between shareholders.
The case of the Córdoba SME Guaymallén also became relevant, which at the beginning of this year requested the opening of its preventive bankruptcy for a debt exceeding USD 19 million, in a context of tight margins, deterioration in the price of milk and growing financial difficulties.
SanCor, for its part, has continued in bankruptcy proceedings since February of last year. The cooperative faces more than 300 bankruptcy requests and a debt that exceeds USD 400 million. In recent days, Justice ratified the company’s intervention after detecting the concealment of key information, in a crisis that has not yet found a clear solution.
In parallel, two companies have already been left out of the market.Lácteos Conosur, operator of the historic La Suipachense brand, and ARSA (Alimentos Refrigerados Sociedad Anónima) declared bankruptcy last November. Both were carrying million-dollar debts, rejected checks and a total stoppage of activity. Both ARSA and La Suipachense had been managed by the Venezuelan group Maralac until the definitive closure of their plants.
