Netflix is once again betting on Korean romance with Boyfriend on Demand, a romantic comedy that takes a unique technological proposal as its starting point. The series brings together Jisoo, a member of the girl band BLACKPINK, and the heartthrob Seo In-guk in its stellar cast.In addition, the cameo of other famous actors is anticipated as possible love interests of the protagonist.
According to the official synopsis released by Netflix, the story follows Seo Mi-rae, a webtoon producer exhausted by work and disappointed with real-life romance.Tired of the daily monotony, Mi-rae finds an escape in a subscription-based virtual dating service, a simulation that allows her to experience ideal loves in carefully designed digital worlds.
Jisoo herself described the series as an opportunity for viewers to live “exciting love stories through the characters,” as there will be a variety of “dream situations” in the story.
This is evident in the first teaser revealed by Netflix on February 4.The fiction is shown with a light, fun and fanciful tone. “Tired of life and fed up with dating, but you still want romance?” says a phrase from the trailer.
In the images, Mi-rae connects to a mysterious device and enters the “Boyfriend on Demand” service, where she is guided to a universe of virtual dates. The trailer shows the protagonist connecting with attractive suitors in contexts familiar to kdrama fans: university campuses, luxury yachts, a hospital, a royal palace or even some period in Korean history.
Apparently, Mi-rae will have the facility to choose what kind of guy and what kind of date she wants to experience while connected to the device.
This character is played by Kim Jisoo, known for her role as a singer and dancer in BLACKPINK, one of the most successful female groups in the history of K-pop.His time in acting began in 2015 with a cameo in The Producers.Five years later, she got her first leading role with Snowdrop. In A Subscription Boyfriend he plays Park Kyung-nam, Mi-rae’s colleague and professional rival in the webtoon industry.According to Soompi, Kyung-nam is considered an “ace” in the office, someone the protagonist would prefer to avoid, but who keeps an unexpected secret.
Netflix still maintains discretion over the rest of the cast in the series; However, the advance has highlighted the possible presence of other celebrities who would embody the “virtual boyfriends” within the service.According to fans, they could be Seo Kang-jun, Lee Soo-hyuk, Kim Young-dae and Lee Jae-wook.
