Eva Mendes made a public comment about her partner, Ryan Gosling’s, professional relationship with one of her co-stars in the actor’s new film, Project Hail Mary.
The actress, who has been in a relationship with the famous man since 2011, intervened in an Instagram post from the JustJared portal, published on Monday, February 9, referring to the interaction between Gosling and Rocky, a central character in the story.
In his speech, Mendes humorously noted that Rocky, a rock-shaped alien who accompanies Ryan Gosling’s character during his space mission, is “the only co-star I’ve ever been jealous of.”
The actress added: “They spent a lot of time together. They even gave each other rings! WTF!!?”, referring to the closeness that develops between Ryland Grace, played by Gosling, and the Rocky character in the film’s plot.
Project Hail Mary is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name published in 2021 by Andy Weir. The story follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who becomes an astronaut and is sent into space with the mission of saving Earth from a catastrophic event.
During her journey, Grace meets Rocky, a brown, multi-legged alien voiced by James Ortiz (The Woodsman). Both work together to protect their respective planets, establishing a relationship that is central to the development of the story.
Throughout his career, Ryan Gosling has worked with well-known co-stars such as Rachel McAdams in The Notebook, Emma Stone in La La Land, Margot Robbie in Barbie and Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy.
However, Rocky is presented in the trailer as a character destined to generate a special connection with the audience and play a significant role in the film’s narrative.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling maintain a private profile when it comes to their personal lives. The couple has two daughters together, Esmeralda, 11 years old, and Amada, 9 years old.
It should be noted that during an interview on the Good Morning America program, Eva assured that her last film with Ryan was so significant that she decided to close that chapter.
For her, working with her husband on the film The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) was the peak of her career and although she considered the father of her daughters to be “one of the best actors” that exists, she has no interest in sharing credits with him again.
“I don’t think we’ll do it again. Working with Ryan was like a grand finale. He made me feel like I’d reached the pinnacle of my career. I can’t imagine anything that could top that,” he explained.
She even said that shortly after that film, she preferred to retire from the film industry to become a full-time mother.
Despite the discretion, the actress has shared materials related to Project Hail Mary on her Instagram account, including the trailer and publications inviting followers to the film’s premiere.
Among these actions, a video published on February 7 stood out, in which the artist throws a movie-themed soccer ball through the circular sign of Randy’s Donuts in Los Angeles, as part of the promotion of the Super Bowl trailer.
The cast of Project Hail Mary also includes Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung and Lionel Boyce, in addition to the character of Rocky. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 20, 2026.
