TikTok: users leave the social network in the United States after changes to its privacy policy

Since announcing a new privacy policy and transferring its operations in the United States to a joint venture under local leadership, TikTok has seen a notable increase in the number of users deleting the app in that country.

Concern among users skyrocketed after TikTok requested to accept an updated privacy policy on January 22, 2026. Numerous social media posts questioned the extent of data the platform could collect, including sensitive information such as ethnicity, sex life, sexual orientation, immigration status and financial data.

It should be noted that this language generated skepticism and mistrust, and many users, including creators with large audiences, chose to leave the platform.

Creator Dre Ronayne, with almost 400,000 followers, announced on Threads his decision to delete his account because he considered that the terms and censorship were out of control.

Other influencers expressed frustration over TikTok’s lack of communication about the impact of the new joint venture, while reporting technical issues and difficulties uploading videos.

During these days of uncertainty, service interruptions and content loading failures were recorded. An official account of the joint venture in X reported that these difficulties were due to a power outage in a data center in the United States and that work was being done to restore normality.

However, the creators pointed out that the platform has not provided clear information about the future of their accounts and operation under the new structure.

Despite the increase in uninstalls, data from Sensor Tower shows that the level of active users on TikTok has remained stable in the United States compared to the previous week.

This situation indicates that, although the number of users abandoning the application due to concerns about privacy and transparency is growing, the active user base has not suffered a significant drop so far.

The future of the social network in the US market remains uncertain, while concern persists over the handling of personal data and the company’s communication with its users and content creators.

According to information confirmed by TikTok in an official statement and published by various media, the new company, called TikTok USDS Joint Venture, will have a majority American shareholding and will be managed under local custody. This restructuring responds to the requirements of national security regulations in the United States.

The company reported that this new company was created after the approval of an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump on September 25, 2025.The goal, according to TikTok itself, is to protect the data of more than 200 million users and 7.5 million American companies.

This measure seeks to avoid the veto of the application by the authorities, in compliance with a national security law ratified in January by the Supreme Court, which required ByteDance to divest from TikTok’s US business or withdraw from the country.

The agreement was reached after negotiations between US officials and representatives of the Chinese government.President Trump celebrated the result on TruthSocial: “I am very happy to have helped save TikTok. It will now be owned by a group of great American patriots and investors, the largest in the world, and will be an important voice.”

In the same post, he added: “I just hope that in the future those who use Yaman TikTok remember me.”Trump also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that “he could have made the opposite decision, but he didn’t, and I thank him for his decision.”
