The trailer for Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie (The Super Mario Galaxy Movie) introduced Yoshi for the first time in the saga’s cinematic universe.
The arrival of the green dinosaur, one of the most popular characters in the Mario world, was anticipated in the post-credits scene of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, when its characteristic polka-dotted egg appeared cracking.
The new trailer confirmed that Yoshi will have a relevant participation in the sequel, joining the main team during the trip through space.
Mario and Luigi found Yoshi in a hidden cave while exploring different galaxies.
This appearance responded to the expectations of fans and expanded the group of protagonists with a character who debuted in 1990 in the video game SuperMario World for Super Nintendo.
Yoshi provided different skills and ways of playing since his entry, and his first title, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, expanded his role in the Nintendo universe.
In the preview, Yoshi collaborated with Toad to protect the child versions of Mario and Luigi from unknown threats.
He was also seen using a Super Scope 6, in a nod to Super Nintendo accessories.
Other scenes included Mario and Princess Peach dodging traps in Bowser’s Castle, while Luigi wore his frog suit, bringing together references to the source material.
The script of the film, still without an official synopsis by Illumination and Nintendo, took as inspiration the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy.
In that title, players accompany Mario on a journey through different planets to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, facing spatial challenges and new enemies.
The trailer also showed Bowser Jr. and Princess Rosalina, characters that join the film saga with the voices of Benny Safdie and Brie Larson.
The main cast reunited Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
The direction was by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and the script was written by Matthew Fogel.
The studios stated that the goal was to “expand the world of Mario” and present a “bright and fun” story for those who played the video games and for younger audiences.
Illumination and Nintendo confirmed that the global release date for SuperMario Galaxy: The Movie will be April 1, 2026, bringing forward the initial schedule.
In Japan, the film will be shown on April 24 and will reach other international markets during that month.
The first installment, Super Mario Bros. The Movie, exceeded USD 1.3 billion in global revenue and was the third highest-grossing animated film.
Enthusiasm among the public grew after comments from Jack Black, who voiced Bowser.“There are tons of hidden winks,” he commented in a statement to GamesRadar. And for those who love this universe, “it will be very satisfying to see how it was adapted to the cinema.”
The actor did not reveal details of the story, but showed enthusiasm for a continuation that takes up elements recognized by those who follow the franchise.
The film saga, which began with two Italian plumbers transported from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom, expanded to a galactic scale with new planets, allies and enemies.
The trailer included action scenes, space challenges and the return of music composed by Brian Tyler, who participated in the first film.
With the premiere scheduled for next spring, Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in animated cinema in 2026.
